CERT CC launches Twitter bot to give security bugs random names

Slacks new ChatGPT bot will talk to your colleagues for you

In case you missed the discourse around this, Twitter for years has provided a free version of its site tools to anyone who wanted it. The idea was theoretically to curb the site’s bot problem, but a counter-argument is that all it would do is kill beloved bot accounts like @PossumEveryHour, which just posts pictures of possums every hour. These kinds of friendly, innocuous bot accounts are a big part of why Twitter remains fun to use, despite, well, everything about it. Additionally, the ChatGPT Slack bot can help you find answers “on any project or topic” using its AI-powered research tools as well as summarize channels or threads so you can stay updated on what’s been happening at work. Companies and organizations can join the waitlist for the ChatGPT beta here.

programming tasks you shouldn’t hand off to AI – and why

The program, which went live last week, is among the first of its kind to monetarily reward the efforts of those building AI bots. There’s a lot of information that we can’t access via a Google search, but instead tend to make a mental note of in order to recall. Sometimes, we might jot these things down in Notepad, but often we forget to do that, too. A new bot called Wonder wants to help by remembering anything you want, then return the information you need via a text message. “Our goal is to create neutral names that provides a means for people to remember vulnerabilities without implying how scary (or not scary) the particular vulnerability in question is,” Metcalf said.

Botlist creates an ‘app store for bots’ to solve the search and discovery problem

  • Additionally, the ChatGPT Slack bot can help you find answers “on any project or topic” using its AI-powered research tools as well as summarize channels or threads so you can stay updated on what’s been happening at work.
  • While earlier this month it emerged Facebook is testing a similar offering called ‘Instant Games’ inside its messaging app, Messenger.
  • Sarah has worked as a reporter for TechCrunch since August 2011.
  • As of October (through the 24th), it has seen over 18.4 million installs.

Poe, meanwhile, has been gaining traction amid the growing AI chatbot market. The idea for Wonder comes from University of Arizona student Jordan Singer and grad Shivkanth Bagavathy, who works full-time at Recruiting Ventures in Scottsdale, Arizona. The two team up together on a number of projects, many of which make their way over to Product Hunt, as the Wonder bot did recently. Companies and researchers realized that the bugs they discovered had more chances to stand out if the bug had a cool-sounding name. Named Vulnonym, the bot is operated by the CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) at the Carnegie Mellon University, the first-ever CERT team created, and now a collaborator and partner of the DHS’ official US-CERT team.

The group decided to follow a format that is familiar to users who are exploring an unfamiliar technology. But freelance developer Mubashar Iqbal and Seth Louey, a creative developer at a software agency, actually built the site as a side project over weekends. Everyone still holds their day jobs, but will continue to work on Botlist as they can. In fact, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella  is so enthusiastic about bots, that he referred to them as the “next applications” at Microsoft’s BUILD conference this March.

Or the malware can just commingle its activity with the humans’ activity on the device, making it nearly impossible for fraud detection to distinguish the real human from the bot, made from malware hidden on the device. For starters, we’ve reached a saturation point with the mobile app stores in developed markets. While there are new apps arriving all the time, many users download almost no new apps per month, according to studies. They’re basically happy with the apps they already have installed – Facebook, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Instagram, etc. Put your brand in front of 10,000+ tech and VC leaders across all three days of Disrupt 2025.

The directory is also fairly bare bones in terms of content. It has brief descriptions of the bots, photos or screenshots, and there’s a section for reviews below. Sometimes the screenshots are merely page from the bot’s Product Hunt listing (also linked), which isn’t as useful as seeing the bot in action. Last month, for example, Telegram launched a bot-powered gaming platform — with a new API to support creating more visually appealing games that live inside chats on its platform.

In an email interview, Tossell said he saw that individual platforms that were enabling bots were developing their own lists. But the group felt that having a centralized site for users to discover bots would provide a better venue for developers looking to find an audience. Over the years, bots have become even more efficient at what they do – make money. For example, instead of loading the entire webpage with ads on it, they call just the ad units themselves, to save time and bandwidth. This is called “naked ad calls” 2 and it allows the bots to generate even more ad impressions per unit of time. Bots also flock to higher CPM forms of digital ads — like CTV — which have CPMs that are often 10X higher than display ads.
